Why Some Motorola Moto G2 XT1068 Devices are Missing Lollipop Updates?

Hi people,

I purchased a Moto G2 on september from Flipkart in india. The device was replaced with a new one when the old motherboard fried.(Reason-frequent restart which resulted in complete dead phone)

I was given a new phone and it worked perfect and i didn't notice any big changes other than the launcher was an optional one, while my returned device had a 120mb update which made Google now launcher the default one.
I was happy, the device worked fine and didn't care why the new device had such a change..

It is when the people who bought devices after me started getting udpates, i felt awkward. I chatted with Motorola executives and all they said was it was normal.

I went into the issue and found out that, all the people who received the 120mb updates on spetember were on build number

System version-21.11.23.titan_retaildsds_retaildsdsall.en.03.retin

While mine was on

System version-21.11.14.titan_retaildsds_retaildsdsall.en.03.retin

which was the version when i bought the device from flipkart.

It now made sense. Somehow, the replaced device skipped a minor update and still stuck on old version. Hence the Lollipop updates are denied and hence every time i check it says already updated

It will stay like this till Motorola figures a way to update the 21.11.14 people directly to Lollipop

Luckily i was able to get hold of the OTA 5.0.2 file of lollipop update and manually flashed it to 21.11.23 and eventually to 21.11.28

How To Apply Update From SD Card in Motorola Moto G (Works with Moto G2 also)

Applying an OTA update can be an issue if you missed an intermediate update and a forced manual update is necessary...
The options you have are

1)GOTO authorised service centre
2)Manual update

Here i am going to share the manual update procedure using OTA captured files without unlocking or rooting your device. The OTA captured files are the files downloaded during soak tests and hence they are 100% genuine, so that it is just like doing the procedure in Wi-Fi normally
Because of this, your warranty and future updates would be available and won't be discontinued

Steps in short

1)Getting the device into fastboot mode
2)Going into Recovery menu
3)Enable additional options
4)Perform update

In Detail

1)Getting device into fastboot mode

The steps are simple,
a)Turn the device off and wait 5 seconds
b)press volume down button and without leaving it press and hold power button.
c)leave both after 5 seconds
d)You can see a menu like this below
e)use volume down to navigate and select options using volume up button (Remember, using power button in this menu would restart your phone)

2)Going into recovery menu

a)Navigate as told above to recovery menu and press volume up and device will restart. Wait till a dead robot screen comes with "No command written" as in below picture

3)Enable additional options

a)Press and hold volume up button for 10 seconds and without releasing it, tap power button and leave it. Now you can see additional options menu

4)Apply update from SD card

a) Navigate to apply update from sd card using volume down and up buttons to select update file and power button to confirm (Yes, in this menu its different than step 1, please read again if any confusions )

 4.a)Update stage 10% (Picture below)

 4.b)Update stage 50%

After the update, additional options menu will again come and you can reboot the device and return to using the device

NOTE: Use OTA update files and other files only if certified by valid people or forums like XDA.. Using Update files from unknown sources can corrupt the device.

Are You Temporarily Banned From Whatsapp Too? Then Read This

My Experience

I have been using whatsapp+ (Plus) for the past 6-7 months as it provided the user with online toasts, better view, and the themes were better than the default theme WhatsApp provided.

It was exactly 12:00am in the morning (21/1/2015) when my phone notification light came up which woke me up...

This is what it showed

Possible Reasons

I had received this alert many times earlier...so this is not a first thing...
  • If you are sending multiple messages to users who do not in add you in their contact or address book. Ask them to first add your number in their address book, only than you can send multiple messages.
  • If you are blocked by too many users in a very short span of time due to your suspicious activity. You have to ensure it that you are sending messages only to the people who want to receive messages from you.
  • If you are creating too many groups on WhatsApp and are adding too many people in the groups. Make sure that others also add you in their list. If you keep adding others without others adding you back in their address book, you may be temporary ban from using WhatsApp.
  • - See more at: http://techyblog.org/temporarily-banned-from-using-whatsapp/#sthash.1apUF2ns.dpuf
The same message and countdown can come when you

    • Send messages to users who don't add you in their contact (Around 50/so texts would ban you)
    • If you are blocked by many users in a short span of time..
    • If many groups are created by you
    • If you add many people to a particular group and they all leave as if they were added without permission

    Then What?

    • This time its different, this ban is meant only for third party app users.
    • Many errors have crept in this ban method that, even users who currently use genuine whatsApp got banned.
    • Reason is the existing Whatsapp+ files inside the whatsApp folder

    Workarounds Tried so far

These are the methods i tried to get it up and running...But i couldnt bypass the contact sync, as before that the countdown popup comes up.

    • Uninstalling WhatsApp plus and clearing directory before installing genuine app from play store
    • Advancing time as we all use to do in candy crush and other games
    • Advancing system dates
    • Swapping systems (interchanged phones)
All the above don't work..so don't try it and waste time.. Wait for the countdown timer to stop count for you to use WhatsApp.

    What To Do?

    • Kindly uninstall the third party app, delete all existing files from the memory of your device and install the WhatsApp from playstore
    • If you didn't do the above, the timer can add an extra +24 hours and the repeated occurrences can result in a permanent ban
    • I temporarily asked my contacts to ping me in Hike, if they need me urgently.
