PC Time Resets On Every Restart

Question

"Its Anil here

My computer seems to reset the time when i turn it on the next day.Is it some sort of virus or the CMOS battery is dead? My PC is now 5 years old. I have an intel DG33-FB board. "

Thanks

Answer

Hi Anil

Its most likely that the C-MOS battery is about to be dead soon, as your system is 5 year old. A photo of the same is given below

Please replace the battery and check. It costs hardly 60RS (India). Even after that you are experiencing the same issue, then the chance of virus infection can come into play

Keyboard Not Working and Struck at Press F2 to Continue Screen

Question
(The question was in hindi and converted to english)

"Vighnesh,
I have been experiencing a weird problem in my desktop. My logitech keyboard is not being detected in my system and due to that i cannot press f2 key to continue booting onto my system. I tried with a different keyboard, but that too wont detect and i can enter the BIOS by pressing delete key, but i cant navigate in the bios settings, before that keyboard becomes non-responsive again. "

Please sort this out
Anonymous

Answer

This is a general issue in any motherboard, especially in an ASUS motherboard when the BIOS battery is almost FLAT. You may get a screen like this and your keyboard maybe non-responsive (even the number lock light not respond)

You have to get a new bios battery, costing roughly 1USD,(60 RS). Then you have to do a C-MOS reset for the keyboard to be detected correctly. Repeat the C-MOS reset again if it doesnt sort-out in the first try.

To do the C-MOS reset

You didnt specify your model of the motherboard,Hence i cant specify correct location and procedure. If you got a product manual with you, search through it and from the layout, identify the jumper pins, switch the jumper from 2nd and 3rd pins to 1st and 2nd pins..You can do the C-MOS reset

A small request, please include your name, next time you mail me
(I could find out your name from your mail id)

Thanks

Choose Correct DNS Servers For Your ISP

There maybe a situation when you choose the general DNS servers of google, and Open DNS, your browsing response is too bad. In such a situation, the below article comes into play
For those who dont know how-to setup a DNS server manually for browsing speed, refer to these articles and then only continue in this article

The domain name system resolves the ip addresses from the ids that we enter in the url tab.Its dependent on how fast these servers resolve the data that our browsing speed varies. (Referring to a normal 1Mbps broadband or 3G connection).

As i said earlier, there may arise some situations where the ISP DNS servers, OPEN DNS servers, and Google DNS servers are faulty or down (cases of breakage of under-ocean cables). In such situations you can use a tool to find out the best responding DNS servers and switch to them for good browsing speeds

DNS-BENCH

This software by Gibson research corporation, find out the best available DNS servers for your current connection, as the name specifies the purpose.

Below you can find the working nature of this software...

The welcome page of the software

Now select the nameservers tab and then wait for the progress bar to load fully. This ensures the complete nameservers are included in the benchmark.

The nameservers list loads

Now click on the run-benchmark button, sit back and relax while the best nameservers are chosen for your ISP.(In normal conditions, google DNS would be rated first and in case of breakdown, the rating will go down, and the next best DNS server would be shown first after the benchmark.

Benchmark running

For best results, avoid downloading or running any torrent clients so that the benchmark is accurate
Imply the DNS servers referring to the tutorials i provided at the starting of this article. The download link to the software is provided below

Thanks

Dear Deepak,
This is quite an old motherboard. around 6 years old to be precise.

Yes it can support USB 3.0 with the add on pci card which you can get cheaply on ebay, amazon or flipkart.
It roughly costs 1200 Indian rupees and can go on with any motherboard supporting pci slots

Pci slots of Intel DG965RY board marked with yellow circle

The image of the device is attached below.

Unraveling Bitcoin Part 1 : What is it?

Bitcoins, a name that is now frequently seen in newspapers, mainly in the news related to stock markets, would have made you think what it is. This curiosity might have been backed up but the increasing price it has. Bitcoin, once which didn't quite make up to value for 1 cent, is now booming at 1200$ last month. Currently the price is about 650$, as reported by Mt.Gox , and exchange where bitcoin - local currency trade is held. Much stories is found on the internet now, and I stumbled upon a funny one. A programmer, in 2010, sold 10000 bitcoins, each which was valued at 0.003$ at that time for 2 pizzas worth 30$. Now the same is worth about 6 Million Dollars. Now thats the Bitcoin effect.

Q: So, What is bitcoin?
A: It is a cryptocurrency.

Q: Woah.. Whats that?
A: It is the digital medium of exchange based on the concepts of cryptography. Err.... Cryptography is the study of techniques for secure communication with 2 people. You want to send something to your friend and ensure that no one else can read the data, you encrypt the data with a secret key, this makes the data just some garbled letters, numbers and symbols to anyone who read, but your friend can use the secret key(same or different) to decrypt back the data. There are 2 types of crytography- Symmetric key crytography and public key cryptography. There is only one key for encryption and decryption in the former, whereas there are 2 keys namely public key and private key in the later, one for encryption and the other for decryption. The bitcoin cryptocurrency is based on public key cryptography.

Q: So what is this.. bitcoin used for ?
A: It is the digital replacement for money. For a commodity or service or whatever, you can spend bitcoins instead of real money.

Q: Why? I have my netbanking account, I can use my money.
A:  Well, bitcoins are decentralized. ie., it is not controlled by a central authority. No body owns it. There is a client software that is used for transacting bitcoins, but that is open source. There is no need of a third party for the transaction. So you can be sure no one is spying on you. Because of this, bitcoins are booming on the black market. In addition to that the transactions are fast, irreversible by design, and cost very little compared to other payment networks.

Q: So how does bitcoin work?
A: As I said bit coin used public key cryptography. Apart from that it uses peer to peer networking (like a torrent, you connect to other computers directly, not to a server) and proof of work system (That is quite beyond the beginner level scope of this article, read it here.)
